The story behind the image
The Matterhorn (Cervino for the Italians) is the Mountain of Mountains. Shaped like a jagged tooth, it's a magnet for adventurers looking for a 4.478 metres mythical climb in Switzerland. It makes it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe and it was one of the last (1865) main Alpine mountains to be ascended because of the fear it inspired in early mountaineers. Even these days an average of 12 climbers die each year due to a number of factors including the difficulty of the climb and its inherent dangers, inexperience, falling rocks, and overcrowded routes. The Matterhorn is thus amongst the deadliest mountains in the world.
Being a climber myself I just had to see the mountain of mountains and I had to see it in its winter coat. So I went to Zermatt in December, visited the graves of the brave souls who tried to conquer the mountain and I wandered around for days to admire the Matterhorn from all possible angles. The mountain, reflected in the Riffelsee, is the most popular view for photographers. But I wanted more. Finally, after days roaming through the valley, I found the perfect spot: the mountain in an ideal angle with a beautiful mountain cabin in the foreground.
This photo was taken in the early morning in rainy & cloudy conditions.
